Ashley + Stephen’s Fall Wedding at Anderson Pavilion

How did you and Stephen meet? What was your first impression of him? What was his first impression of you?

Stephen and I met at a mutual friend's going away party in Downtown Cincinnati. We hit it off pretty much right away after a friend introduced us. We spent the rest of the night talking and getting to know one another. Shortly, thereafter, we spent several days in a row together. We were literally snowed in together. At the end of that time, we didn't want to say goodbye and continued to date one another from that point on. Our relationship came very naturally to us.

Tell us about the proposal.

Stephen proposed to me at 21C downtown the weekend after my birthday. It was intimate and special, exactly how I would have wanted it. My engagement ring was originally his paternal grandmother’s ring and I am very honored to wear it. We celebrated the next morning with close friends and family.

For Ashley + Stephen, exchanging vows along the banks of the Ohio River with the iconic Roebling Bridge in the distance was perfection. The fall wedding was held at Anderson Pavilion just across from Smale Park. The first look took place on a rooftop and showcases the Cincinnati skyline with its artful play of hills, old world and contemporary architecture. Ashley said it best when she described the transformation of Anderson Pavilion into an "urban oasis". The ceremony took place in a room of tall windows which filtered in the soft light onto the folds of the airy ceiling draping and floral ceremony arch. Velvety peonies, layers of roses, and an abundance of greenery brought the space alive. Ashley was stunning in her vintage inspired lace wedding dress standing with her bridesmaids in their burgundy mix and match dresses. Claire & Barrett Photography captured the day.

What were your favorite details?

On our wedding day, I was blown away by all of our amazing vendors! Katie Smith from Katie’s Blooms as well as Kim Fitzpatrick from Fitz the Occasion completely transformed the interior of Anderson Pavilion into an urban oasis. The draping, lighting, and florals really made the event special and unique. Anderson Pavilion Catering (a merger of Funky’s and Vonderharr’s catering) prepared the food and it was excellent! It was really important to us that we had delicious food and they did not disappoint!

How did you decide on your venue? Why was it the perfect choice?

We really loved the view of the Roebling Bridge from Anderson Pavilion. We spend a lot of time downtown and knew that we wanted a venue that was urban but also romantic. We were also attracted to the ability to have the ceremony and reception in the same space. We were lucky to have a gorgeous fall day and so our guests were able to have cocktail hour outside along the Ohio River.

Describe your wedding day. Is there a particular moment that remains in your memory most vividly?

For me, our wedding day was very relaxed. I really enjoyed being able to spend the morning with my closest girlfriends and family. Everything went very smoothly. My favorite memory is our first look. Claire was amazing at capturing the moment and it is clear by the expression on my face that I was ecstatic to see Stephen.

What helped you in the planning process? What resources did you find helpful?

My wedding planner, Christina Penfield with Wild Belle Events helped bring my vision to life. Katie from Katie’s Blooms was also incredibly insightful and creative in helping me achieve the vision I wanted for our wedding. The staff at Anderson Pavilion allowed us to be very creative with the space and ironed out any kinks. Claire was instrumental on our wedding day in helping everyone get organized as well.

Best thing about being married?

Having the same last name and being able to introduce Stephen as my husband is my favorite part. It feels different being married, even though we had been together for four years prior to our engagement.

We split on our time between Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore and The Modern Honolulu in Oahu, Hawaii. Our favorite part was an ATV tour of Kualoa Ranch, especially riding our ATVS along the coast and seeing the gorgeous water below.
